I mean, of course, we need to live in the moment and stay in the present most of the time, but we also need to evaluate our thoughts, feelings, and motives.

Look at yourself objectively every day
Trying to see your real, true self can be a complicated task. It can also be very rewarding. An easy way to get started with this is to write down the things you are good at. You also write down the things you need to improve and what you are most proud of.
Write down something every week that you think you have done well, that you need to improve and that you are proud to have achieved. However, self-reflection is most effective with a tool, which is the next step:
Keep a self-reflection/self-awareness journal
You can write in any journal/notebook. I have found that writing down my thoughts, completely clears my mind.
This is why I write in my journal every morning and evening. To clear my mind and my thoughts. It can be an extremely powerful tool to keep with you.
If you can’t find the time to do it every day, you can simply do it once or twice a week. Write down your feelings and thoughts of the days that have passed. Write down what you have achieved and what you would like to achieve in the next couple of days. This is an excellent way to get started.
Ask yourself what your values are and what is most important to you these days.
Practice mindfulness and meditation

Meditation can help you improve your mindful awareness and it helps you stay present. It’s quite normal that you will have thoughts whirling around in your head during meditation. However, the point of meditation is to let your thoughts pass without judging them.
Take personality tests
Get regular feedback from friends, family, and co-workers
We don’t really know what other people think of us unless we ask them directly. By listening to the observations from friends and coworkers, we can learn a great deal about ourselves. Let them play the role of an honest mirror.
Critique doesn’t have to be a bad thing, and we can get a lot from positive feedback and critique. Learning to accept that your friends might have different opinions about you than you have yourself, is a great self-awareness trait.
