Building good and new habits takes time. It’s not something that simply happens overnight. Studies suggest that it can take between three to four weeks for a habit to actually be a simple part of your life and to stick. Building new habits takes time, patience and persistence.

Firstly, you need to ask what kind of good habits you want to implement and build into your life and why they are important to you. What do you want out of implementing this exact habit? What will change in your life, when this habit has been implemented?
Don’t change everything at once – start small
Even if you want to implement 5 different habits into your life, it’s important that you don’t overwhelm yourself. Start small and start by only bringing in the habit, that is most important to you.
Maybe you would like to drink more water? If that’s the most important habit to you, start by focusing on that and only that. Start by doing this once or twice a week. If you can do more that’s great, but you don’t want to overwhelm yourself either. Once you are drinking more water on those two days, you can start focusing on two more days in the week and so on.
Pick two daily habits
It’s important that you don’t focus on more than 1 or 2 good habits you would like to change. Once you have these habits down you can try and implement more habits into your routine.
You don’t have to do everything every single day. You simply need to pick two good habits that are most important to you. Stick with them for a few weeks, before you start bringing in other habits.
The five-second rule
The five-second rule is a great rule to implement into your life. It’s not a habit pr say. The rule is that you want to act within five seconds to do any sort of habit.
The point is that you don’t want to overthink a habit. Overthinking everything will most likely make you talk yourself out of doing it at all.
With this rule, you will start acting faster and stop overthinking everything. If it takes you ten seconds, that’s ok too. The idea is to act fast and don’t overthink your decision to do it.
building good Habits should be easy and convenient
Let’s say you would like to start drinking more water. In order to make this easy and convenient make sure to keep a water bottle by your work desk or your nightstand. This way you can drink water as the first thing in the morning when you wake up and while you are working at your desk. It’s right there in front of you to remind you to do it.
Maybe you would like to start reading or journaling more? A good idea is to keep a book or a journal in your back everywhere you go. You can also keep the items by your bed. This way it will be easy for you to start doing it and there is no excuse to get started.
Keeping track/use a habit tracker
I have always been a visual person and I find that crossing things off a list is extremely satisfying to me. I know, I am probably a bit weird that way. This way you can also see how often you are doing your habit.
I use a habit tracker to keep track of all my habits. I have several ones I do in the evening and in the morning, as well as throughout the day.
You can either use a calendar in which you write down all of your habits, or you can use a specific habit tracker worksheet. I know people also keep habit trackers in their bullet journals, but I don’t have one of those. I have simply printed out a habit tracker worksheet that I use.
You can write down all the habits you eventually would like to have in your routine, but you don’t have to focus on doing all of them every day. Focus on the two most important habits you would like to implement, and just cross the other habits off when you get around to doing them. However, actually having your habits written down on paper will make you want to do them eventually.
What is your why?
You need to constantly remind yourself, why you would like to implement these good habits into your routine. What value is this or that habit going to bring to your life? Why do you want to add it to your routine?
If you keep remind yourself why you are implementing new habits into your life, you will stay motivated. Don’t just add a habit for the sake of it, find your why to every habit.
Adjust your habits
At some point, you may have to look into your habits and adjust them if something is not working the way you would like it to. Ask yourself what is working and what is not working and whether you can fit this or that habit into your life in a different way.
Find out what works for you and adjust every habit to fit properly. It’s takes work, patience, time and consistency to change your life.
Do any of your friends want to build good habits as well? Do they want to start exercising more or drink more water? Keep up with them and let them know how you are doing and ask about their habits as well. Having someone to hold you accountable will make a huge difference.
