Recognizing the symptoms is not easy
Recognizing depression is no easy feat. Parents, especially, can have a hard time recognizing the symptoms in their kids. If you are a parent reading this, then ask yourself if your kid has been irritated, in a bad mood or throwing a tantrum lately? Or maybe your kid has had a low energy level or lost interest in a hobby or activity?

What happens in the brain when someone is depressed?
Our brain contains chemical messengers (these are also known as neurotransmitters) that let the nerve cells talk to each other.
In order for the many functions in our body and our mind to work properly, neurotransmitters must communicate with each other and work together frequently.
It is often said by scientists that mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are caused by either too many or too little neurotransmitters in the brain.
As an example, if you have a lower than normal level of neurotransmitters in the brain, it can lead to symptoms such as:
- Feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and emptiness
- Overeating or loss of appetite

Biochemistry – as mentioned earlier a lower than normal level of neurotransmitters in your brain may be responsible for the symptoms you are experiencing.
Genetics / inherited traits – it is very possible that depressive disorders run in certain families and that some kids are more prone to symptoms than others.
Personality – people with low self-esteem may be more prone to depressive disorders than people who are more confident. People with low self-esteem tend to be more easily overwhelmed by stress.
Environmental factors – violence, neglect, abuse, poverty are all triggers that can lead to severe depression.

How can depression be treated?
Depression can be treated with medication, but it can also be treated in more natural ways. It really depends whether your diagnose is severe or not. People with severe depression might need help coping.
I had help in the beginning from a psychiatrist and it helped me a great deal. Without her, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It might even be necessary with prescribed medication.
However, there are many more natural ways to beat depression rather than using medication. These include regular exercise as this increases positive feelings and will improve your mood naturally. Getting enough sleep and eating a healthy, well-balanced diet will also help relieve symptoms of depression.
Once you have gotten a proper diagnose and are getting professional help along with natural ways of relieving symptoms of depression, most people will overcome it.
All though, personally I believe that depression will never truly leave us. It is possible to experience long periods (even several years) of happiness with depression, but people who have experienced chronic depression before will always have to be aware of any triggers that can cause a new round of depression in the future.

Depression is a common major depressive disorder and a serious mental health illness. It negatively affects how you think, feel and act. If depression remains untreated it will most likely have an effect on your day-to-day life, and it can create several other mental health issues such as anxiety and stress.
Fortunately, it can be treated. It can be treated with medication through your doctor, but there are also more alternative and natural ways to treat depression, which I fully believe in.
